ABC’s of Bible Memory Verses

I had several people ask me to send them my story about Mrs. Burk who memorized a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet. One of our members said she has created her own list. Here it is for the rest of you.

Haddie Burk was a hundred years old and blind. A man who was in her Sunday School class when he was a kid went to visit her. He said, “Mrs. Burk, you taught me the Bible when I was a boy. I know you can’t see, so I’ve brought my Bible to read to you.”

She said, “Charles, you don’t need to read the Bible to me. All those years when I was able to read, I stored it up in my heart.” She said, “Give me the letters of the alphabet and I’ll show you what I mean.”

He said, “A” and she said, “A friend loveth at all times.”

He said, “B” and she said, “Bless the Lord, oh my soul and all that is within me. Bless his holy name.”

He said, “C” and she said, “Cast your burdens on the Lord for he cares for you.”

He said, “D” and she said, “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

He said, “E” and she said, “Every good and perfect gift comes down from above.”

He said, “F” and she said, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.”

He said, “G” and she said, “God is spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and truth.”

He said, “H” and she said, “Hear O Israel, the Lord our God is one lord. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”

And he said “I” and she said, “In thee O Lord I have put my trust.”

And he said “J” and she said, “Judge not lest ye be judged.”

And he said “K” and she said, “Keep thyself in the love of God.”

And he said “L” and she said, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.”

And he said, “M” and she said, “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord.”

And he said, “N” and she said, “Never will I leave you. Never will I forsake you.”

He said, “O” and she said, “O give thanks unto the Lord for he is good and his mercy endures forever.”

And he said, “P” and she said, “Praise the Lord, O my soul and forget not his benefits.”

And he said, “Q” and she said, “quench not the spirit.”

He said “R” and she said, “Remember the Sabbath day and keep it Holy.”

He said, “S” and she said, “Stand still and see the salvation of our Lord.

He said “T” and she said, “They that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like Eagles, they shall run and not grow weary, they shall walk and not faint.”

He said, “U” and she said, “Unto thee O Lord do I lift up my soul.”

He said, “V” and she said, “Verily I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he shall not see the kingdom of God.”

He said, “W” and she said, “Walk in the Spirit and you shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.”

He said, “X” and she said, “Except the Lord build a house, they who built it labor in vain.”

He said, “Y” and she said, “Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me.”

And he said “Z” and she said, “Zeal for the Lord’s house has consumed me.”
